deephollowmind asked: So, I really enjoy seeing your drawings, I think they're amazing! BUT I have one question, and I would appreciate a lot if you answered me. What programs do you use to draw (PS, Illustrator, etc.) and what image size (in pixels) do you recommend for a drawing, kind of like the pages you do for Vibe? And one more thing, did you take any Internet tutorials for drawing or you learned somewhere else? Thanks a lot!!
hey man, glad you dig my stuff :D thanks - lots of questions so lemme pseudo bullet point this shit (totally not ONE question lol)
-WHAT PROGRAM: I only use photoshop. Vibe is all done digitally, as are most things really - but I do ink and draw a lot traditionally as well, I just hate scanning so a lot of it never sees the light of day (that or its got an NDA on it and I can’t publicy show it). Really though I seemed to get asked this a lot during streams or what have you, and really HOW you draw (what program, what medium, etc) doesn’t matter. It’s all about the end result so just use what you’re comfortable with.
-WHAT SIZE: for image size bigger is always better. For Vibe pages i work at somewhere near like 5000x7000, which actually isn’t all that large considering how generally small that ends up making some of the panels. As long as your computer can handle it ALWAYS work larger than you think you need (and obviously always work at least large enough for whatever size you might ultimately want to print something at). Working large will make inks a lot easier to do and cleaner when you zoom back out for display size, and also will make coloring a cinch for similar reasons.
-TUTORIALS: I learned most of what I know just through learning on my own, but a lot of that was due to the help of a number of other artists I’ve met over the internet (most notably daniel stone - check him out). Tutorials can be cool but you have to make sure you trust the source you’re getting them from. Thanks to sites like DeviantArt and their popularity, there’s a lot of misinformation making its way through the pipes, and you really don’t want to be learning things the wrong way (or rather a complete misunderstanding of what it is they’re actually trying to teach). Also collect books or art of people who’s art you admire and try to deconstruct what it is they do and what specifically about their work you like. I generally only look at any given artist for a specific trait that stands out for them and ignore everything else. This way I’m only pulling from the best of what they do and I don’t end up copying any one person - keeps my shit more fresh that way and less a bite of one single artist (also helps my forward momentum). There aren’t many left either, but joining a forum can really go a long way in improving your art as well. Forums are a great way to create a network of artists friends who inspire and push you past your limits. Oh and critique, learn to grow thick skin and find people who are willing to rip you a new asshole from time to time, we learn from our failures not from our successes. Uhhhh yaaaa that pretty much sums it up. Some forums to maybe check out are satellitesoda.com and apedogs.com (if they still exist)
hope that helped :D
